The Air Force Auxiliary's Civil Air Patrol's Cadet program is open to Males and Females between the ages of 12 and 18 years. The Cadet program is dedicated to Aerospace Education, Leadership, Moral Leadership, and Drug Demand Reduction. Cadets are able to participate at Encampments held locally and nationally such as Space Command (Cape Kennedy - Patrick AFB, FL or NORAD - Peterson AFB, CO), National Blue Beret (flightline marshalling for Oshkosh, WI yearly airshow), Glider School (Rome, GA), Hawk Mountain Ranger School (mountain search & rescue training, PA) and others including Flight Academy, National Band, Weather School, Ground Search & Rescue School, just to name a few.
A summer Encampment is held each year in Georgia (Ft. Benning in 2005/2006) as well as a Winter Regional Encampment (Ft. Benning - 2006). Encampment experiences vary somewhat from State to State but at Ft. Benning, for example, in 2006 the Cadets participated in the repelling tower, jump tower, M-16 computer simulator shooting range, and flights in BlackHawk helicopters.
The Cadet program combines discipline (without hazing or harassing) and structure to teach leadership skills as well as advanced aerospace education. The Civil Air Patrol's Cadet Program is the perfect alternative to traditional Public School's JROTC program. There is no requirement to join any branch of Service in armed forces at any time, the program is designed to teach tomorrow's leaders the skills that are required for a professional career. However, if your homeschooler is interested in an ROTC Scholarship or attending a Military Academy, this program can set them above other applicants. We have had many Cadets over the past few years earn scholarships and Academy appointments due to their work and participation Civil Air Patrol (including several home schooled Cadets).
The Griffin Cadet Squadron meets the first three Saturdays of each month from 0845 (8:45 AM) until 1300 (1:00 PM) at the southwest corner of the Griffin/Spalding County Airport. We have earned the honor of "Squadron of the Year" for 2003 and 2005. For more information contact Captain Tim O'Connor at: tkoconnor717@aol.com.
